Remote Learning Expectations 12/1-12/18/2020

November 20, 2020

Parents of Valley High School,

This letter is to inform you that a decision has been made to have all students currently enrolled in Valley High School move to a Remote Learning environment.  From Dec. 1st - Jan. 15th, we will be in remote learning.  At this time, students will return to hybrid learning on Jan. 19th.

With that in mind, we need to inform you of what the Remote Learning expectations will look like going forward.  It will be imperative that a students’ focus be on their required school work each day and not on a personal work schedule or other non-school activity.  Grades will be determined based upon a students’ ability to demonstrate the attainment of the skills and knowledge outlined in the Colorado Academic Standards that have been incorporated into each teachers’ daily lesson plan as measured by the end of unit assessment in each class.  Participation/completion activities will not be a part of a students’ academic grade calculation.

Expectations of Students:

Students:

  • Will be required at all live events scheduled during their assigned class time.  Students must keep their cameras on and audio ON throughout the lesson or until the teacher releases the class.

  • Will log on to Google Classroom daily and will be responsible to complete all assignments posted.

  • Will log on to Infinite Campus daily - for attendance to be registered into IC.

  • Will abide by all school policies in the Student Handbook, including the acceptable use policy for technology.

  • May receive asynchronous instruction (videos, reading, etc.) outside of assigned class times to engage in to supplement instruction.

  • Need to communicate with teachers any needs related to engaging in Remote learning.

  • Students and parents need to communicate with the main office about any medical concerns.

  • Students will be allowed in the building by teacher appointment.

  • Breakfast/Lunch will be allowed to pick up meals in all three towns.

Expectations of Teachers and Staff:

Teachers will:

  • Take “daily” attendance and enter into Infinite Campus (when synchronous learning is taking place).

  • Post all assignments to Google Classroom and update weekly overviews and calendar.  Assignments will be posted by the start of the class on the assigned day.

  • Post all grades to Infinite Campus which will then be updated.

  • Only require live instruction/class meetings during their scheduled class times.

  • Provide a minimum of 30-minute synchronous (live) instruction during their assigned class time.

  • Ensure that activities allow for students at home to participate fully.

  • Be available for student/parent questions or concerns.  Teachers will respond to emails or phone messages in a reasonable timeframe.  Emails or phone calls received after 3:30pm may not be responded to until the subsequent day.

Expectations of Administrators:

Administrators will:

  • Provide support and assist problem-solving with staff and families.

  • Manage systems and procedures to ensure student access to instructional resources and materials.

  • Provide continuous communication and support for Remote Learning.

  • Keep a focus on student social-emotional well-being.

  • Contact parents/guardians and/or related service or support staff ( counselors, case managers) if there are concerns about student engagement and/or work completion.

  • Establish and/or support collaboration structures to best support teacher innovation and practice.

  • Review and respond to teacher, student, and parent feedback.

  • Communicate daily with teachers and counselors to address questions or support needs.

We realize that Remote Learning may be difficult for many students and staff but together we can provide a meaningful educational experience. If you have any questions or concerns, please contact Valley High School at (970) 350 - 4201 and we will gladly provide any clarification you may require.

Respectfully,

Mr. Richard Dalgliesh

Principal

Valley High School

Respetuosamente,

Mr. Richard Dalgliesh

Director

Valley High School

Remote Learning and Quarantine Expectations

Parents and Students of VHS,

On Oct 15th and Oct. 16th, VHS had to suspend In-School Learning activities due to a positive COVID Test.  At any time this could happen again.  There is the possibility that VHS could suspend In-School learning activities from 1 day to 14 days.  There is also the possibility, at any given time, VHS might have to abandon Hybrid Learning and return to Remote Learning.  It is  important that parents and students of VHS understand what the expectations for the students are if we suspend In-School learning.

  1. Students are still responsible for school work.  6-8 hours per day.  This is not an off day.  Please do not encourage your students to sleep in or pick up extra hours of work.

  1. It is highly recommended that students maintain a “normal” academic schedule when they are online.

  1. Teachers will maintain Google Meet hours during their normal class times.

  1. All due dates will still be the same.  Do not expect due dates to change because we have suspended In-School learning activities.

  1. Eligibility will still be pulled for grades during quarantine.

  1. Teachers will still be available to your students for questions.  Teachers will be available from 8:00 am - 3:30 pm.

  1. If we move into permanent Remote Learning, current grading practices will apply.  We will not return to the criteria used during the second semester last school year.

We are rapidly approaching the end of the Fall semester.  We have 6 weeks left.  Please make sure students are taking care of their academic responsibilities.  We will run a normal school schedule until December 18th.  Please do not pull your students early for Winter Break, especially if they are struggling.  As a final note, no decision has been made in regards to Summer School for the summer of 2021.  Please do not count on your students attending Summer School to make up credits.

If you have any questions, please contact the administrative office, 970-350-4201.
