Parents of Valley High School

Parents of VHS,

I know, we know, that the academic changes being made at this time are a struggle for all our learners and their families.  There are no easy answers, and it puts an additional strain on our students, you as parents, and our teachers.  At VHS, we have only one goal and that is to give your children a strong educational base that will last a lifetime.  We want to look out for all our children’s social, physical, and academic needs.  We need your help.

  1. Everyday check your student in on Infinite Campus (IC) if they are at home.

  2. Your child has work to do everyday.  Please provide a quiet place and time to get their work done at home.  They need this space and time to be successful.  If your student has younger brothers and sisters, please try to keep them away from your high school student so they can complete their work.  Non attendance school days are not meant for students to play video games, hang out with friends, work, and catch up on chores.  They are meant for your child to get school work done.  This could take up to 6-8 hours.

  3. All assignments will be done on the computer.  Students will receive their instruction and their assignments on the computer.  Many meetings with teachers will be done on the computer.  The days of pencil and paper are limited.  It is expected that your student be on the computer everyday to check on assignments on google classroom, meet with teachers on google meets, and checking for grades progress on Infinite Campus (IC).

  4. Many of your students are taking higher level academic courses.  These courses take a lot of time.  Sometimes 2-3 times as much as other classes.  Be prepared for your student(s) to be working long hours on just one class.

  5. However, do not mistake a student on the computer as doing the work.  Students can play games all day and look busy as well.  Monitor them on their computer.  Check their work.  Ask them to show you what they did and what they still need to accomplish.

  6. On non-attendance days, set up a schedule for them to accomplish.  At the end of the day, check with them to see if it's done.

  7. Have your students contact their teachers when they are struggling.  Additionally, if you feel that your student is struggling email or call the school.  We have multiple bilingual people who can get your information.

  8. We have tutoring every Tuesday, Wednesday, and Thursday from 3:30 to 4:30.  Students can come, even if they were not in school.  There will be a bus to take them back to SVMS and NVMS.

  9. If your child is sick, have them stay home.  However, they are still responsible for doing their work that day.  They can get all assignments from google classroom.

  10. As a parent, you can see all your students' grades in Infinite Campus.  If you don’t have an account, please contact the office.  Don’t always believe your students when they say things are fine.

  11. As a parent, you can ask all your teachers to share their google classroom pages with you.  Please contact your student’s teachers for those codes.

  12. If you are unsure about google or IC, just call the main office.  We have people who can walk it through with you.

Over the next few months, I will be sending out videos in English and in Spanish.  October 26, from 8:00 - 3:00 pm will be Parent Teacher Conferences.  They will be done virtually, and we can provide translation
