To The Parents and Students of VHS,
I just want to say that I am honored to be the Principal of Valley High School for another year. It is a tremendous pleasure to work with the great students at VHS. We know this year will be challenging in so many ways, but together, we will not only overcome but provide a great education for your children.
As we approach the 2020-2021 school year we will have a series of changes because of the COVID 19 situation. It is extremely important that students and parents understand that we are committed to a positive and healthy experience at VHS. It must be understood by parents and students that no matter what form of learning a family chooses to participate in, the responsibilities of the learner are different from the Spring of 2020.
Students participating in the A/B Hybrid:
Students will be expected to attend class on a regular basis as determined by their assignment to either Cohort A or Cohort B. Cohort A will attend on Tuesday and Thursday, while Cohort B will attend on Wednesday and Friday. Students who do not attend school regularly will be referred to an Administrator or Counselor for follow-up. If attendance issues continue to occur, students may be subject to the District Code of Conduct protocols. Students will be expected to check-in to all 7 classes even on days they are not at the school site. (Check the resolution)
Demonstration of Academic Proficiency
Students will be expected to demonstrate their level of academic proficiency by participating in all class lectures, activities, labs, and assessments as deemed appropriate by the teacher of that class.
Students will then receive a grade based upon their demonstrated skills and mastery of the content during the lesson and or unit. Grades will be determined by the criteria (based upon the standards taught during the lesson or unit) established by the teacher and shared with students and parents during the first days of school. Student grades will not include a Participation component unless it is an integral part of the course requirements or activities such as Band, Physical Education, Construction Trades, AG courses, Catering & Foods and Nutrition, etc.
Students participating in the Remote Learning:
Teachers will be videotaping lessons daily and uploading those into Google Classroom so that students not at the school will have access to the instruction, assignments, resources, and assessments no later than the day following in-person instruction. This will ensure an equitable opportunity regardless of the environment chosen. Students will be requested to attend classes daily. We will try to provide streaming classes in real-time, but also provide a recorded version for later viewing. Teachers will schedule office hours to provide students and parents with support, once a week.
Students will complete the learning activities assigned by their teachers and be contacting their teachers to clarify any questions they may have regarding the previous day's instruction. Students need to be very clear that deadlines assigned by teachers regarding due dates for assignments must be adhered to in order for students to not fall behind and begin struggling with the course content. Due dates will follow onsite learning, and will not be extended because the student is an online learner. Students will then receive a grade based upon their demonstrated skills and mastery of the content during the lesson and or unit. Grades will be determined by the criteria (based upon the standards taught during the lesson or unit) established by the teacher and shared with students during instructional activities. Student grades will not include a Participation component unless it is an integral part of the course requirements or activities such as Band, Physical Education, Construction Trades, AG courses, Catering & Foods and Nutrition, etc.

The amount of health procedures and policies is extensive. Please see the website for details. However, it should be noted that all students must wear a mask entering/exiting the building, in the hallways, and on the buses. Any rooms that have safety concerns (example band/choir) must wear a mask at all times. Students in classes that can not accommodate 6 feet of distance between students must wear a mask. Rooms will be cleaned throughout the day and extensively on Mondays and after school. Parents, please wear a mask while you are in the building. If you need to meet with the administration or counselors, please set up an appointment. Parents, if you come to the door, please present ID and purpose for being at VHS. The office staff will give you directions from there. We will be severely limiting the number of people allowed in the building. Parents, please take note that all events will require you to wear a mask no matter if the event is outside or inside.

Detailed Protocol for COVID and COVID Exposure
Please visit the website frequently throughout the year. We will be sharing more information on the website than in previous years. Also, Parents/Students make sure your contact information on Infinite Campus is accurate. We will be contacting you through email, text, and phone calls throughout the year. In a week, you will be receiving syllabi from your teachers on safety and grading procedures. They will also share how the Hybrid and Remote Learning will look in their classes. Please take some time to look at the teacher's expectations. Make sure that your mailboxes on your phones are set up and are not full.
The life of high school is about the students and the entire high school experience. This year, we might not be able to provide a “typical” high school experience. We most likely will have to change some traditional activities or cancel them altogether. We do not take such things lightly. Just remember, we all do this together. The Viking Ship sails to its destination only through the hard work of every member of this community.
I am proud to be a Viking!!!
