Dear Parents, Students, Teachers, and Building Occupants,
In 1986, Congress passed the Asbestos Hazard Emergency Response Act (AHERA) requiring schools to inspect and identify any asbestos-containing building materials (ACBM). Weld County School District RE-1 hired a certified building inspector to identify and sample any suspect asbestos-containing building materials.
The law further requires the school to have an asbestos management plan. Weld County School District RE-1 has an asbestos management plan available for review in the school district administrative office or the administrative office of the school during regular business hours. Travis Stina, Director of Operations, is our designated asbestos program coordinator, and all inquiries regarding the asbestos plan and asbestos-related issues should be directed to Travis Stinar, stinart@wcsdre1.org.
Asbestos Status in our Schools:
Our schools continue to have a low level of ACBM’s. A majority of the ACBM’s left in our schools were abated (removed) in the 2016 bond program. Any ABCM’s that remain are not in areas that are readily accessible to students and staff and would only be disturbed a specific situation would arise. The safety risk for students and staff is extremely low in Weld RE-1. Our maintenance staff is trained and takes the appropriate precautions to protect themselves if the need arises to disturb these materials. In no situation would students or non-maintenance staff be exposed to work conducted on ACBM’s.
Updates for the year:
There is no work planned for this year that would disturb the remaining ACBM’s. The school maintenance staff inspected the condition of the materials every six months and the condition of the material remains in good condition. This year, we will hire a certified building inspector to re-inspect the ACBM for our required three year re-inspection.
