Letter from the Principal

Dear Parent and Students,
The first quarter of the 2019-2020 school year has come to a close. As normal, the first quarter of the school year brings a great number of successes, challenges, and new learning. This year has been no different. Students will begin a new E-Time course at the start of the new quarter. While all other classes will remain the same, student grades will begin anew. Grades for each quarter will be averaged into a semester grade at the end of each semester. Thank you parents for a great turnout at Parent Teacher Conferences and thank you to the PTO for providing two wonderful meals for the staff on both evenings of conferences.

As we move towards the holiday season, please keep the following in mind: As a general rule we do not do classroom parties unless directly tied to a cultural unit of study. Halloween costumes are okay, but please no masks or face paint. Additionally, all dress code guidelines apply. Please try to limit the number of sugary and unhealthy snacks you send with your student.

At North Valley Middle School we believe extracurricular activities are paramount to a student's overall success and development. Please encourage your student to get involved. Here are a few of the activities and clubs available to students at North Valley Middle School:

Art Club Spelling Bee Kindness Club Spanish Club
STUCONJHSMESA Brain Bowl
Wrestling Girls BasketballVolleyball Swimming
Track Boys BasketballCross-CountryFootball
Sports and clubs at NVMS

The middle school years are an incredible period of growth for all adolescents. Along with being involved, send a strong, consistent message to your student(s) that his/her academics are a high priority. Avoid conversations about academics that discuss your struggle or not liking a particular subject. Ask your student(s) about good things that happened at school, what he/she is proud of accomplishing, and how they can overcome struggles (perseverance). Use your student's planner on a nightly basis to model organization and begin discussion about his/her day. When preteens and teens know that their parents are interested in their academic lives, they'll take school success seriously as well,

Estimados Padres y Estudiantes,

Sincerely,
Mark Avery

Dear Parent and Students:

It is hard to believe that we are already through the first month of the  2019-2020 school year at North Valley Middle School.  It has been a great start; students and staff have settled in and work diligently every day with a focus on achievement and responsibility.

New this year, eight grade students are permitted to take home their Chromebook.  This is a great opportunity for students to grow, take on new responsibility, and continue to learn outside of school.  So far the students are doing a great job of taking care of their devices and ensuring their devices are fully charged every morning.  Parents, thank you for helping your student stay on top of this.  Also new this year, as a safety measure, all students are required to wear their student ID during the school day.  Students who do not have an ID are required to get a temporary ID from the office and return it at the end of the day.  Students will be required to serve a lunch detention after their third temporary ID.   This is another opportunity for students to learn and demonstrate responsibility.

Student safety continues to be of paramount importance in Weld RE-1.   We are fortunate enough to have a full time SRO between North Valley Middle School and Pete Mirich Elementary.  We regularly perform fire, lockout, tornado, and lockdown drills.  We have a radio system with the capability to operate district-wide and communicate with first responders.  Additionally, North Valley Middle School will be receiving as many as ten additional security cameras and a monitor by the end of the first semester.   Please remember all parents and visitors are required to enter the building through the main entrance and check-in with the office.

After-school tutoring has started.  If your student is struggling and needs a little extra help or  just wants  to stay and get homework done, all who want to work are welcome.  Tutoring is held every Tuesday, Wednesday and Thursday from 3:40-4:40.  If your student is unable to walk home from tutoring, please make sure he or she is picked up promptly at 4:40.  Thank you, and if you have any questions, please do not hesitate to contact the school.

Finally, our beautiful building is receiving finishing touches, both inside and out, on phase two of construction.     Thank you to all of the voters and community members who supported the bond.

Sincerely,
Mark Avery
